Ryan Pritchard · Executive Coach & Business Consultant

Leadership that holds up when the stakes rise.

Ryan Pritchard, executive coach and business consultant

Executive coaching and leadership consulting for private equity, investment and finance.

I help partners and senior leaders in private equity, investment and finance lead with greater clarity, influence and impact — especially when the role, the stakes or the business is changing.

The move into partnership changes the job. What built your reputation — technical judgement, deal credibility, individual delivery — is no longer enough on its own.

My work has taken me across the breadth of an investment business: coaching leaders through transition, strengthening teams and helping people lead effectively beyond their own mandate.

A first call, no charge, to see whether this is worth doing.

The work

Leadership that travels across the firm.

The most valuable leaders in an investment business do more than deliver in their own area. They build trust across functions, make sound decisions under pressure and bring people with them when the direction is not yet obvious.

I have worked across the breadth of an investment firm, supporting leadership at individual, team and organisational level. That perspective means the coaching stays connected to the business around the person — not isolated from it.

The approach is practical and behaviour-led. We agree what needs to change, work on it in the reality of the role, and review whether it is making a visible difference.

Working together

How firms bring me in.

I work directly with private equity, investment and finance firms — retained coaching, team engagements and firm-wide programmes.

01

Retained executive coaching

A block of confidential 1:1 work with your partners, MDs, CEOs and CFOs. Outcomes agreed with the individual and, where appropriate, the sponsor — then reviewed against real behaviour.

02

Leadership team engagements

Facilitation and development for boards, investment committees and executive teams — brought in for a defined piece of work with a clear question to answer.

03

Firm-wide programmes

Leadership programmes designed around the demands of your business and delivered across cohorts, with diagnostics and measurement agreed before we start.

Who I work with

  • Partners stepping into a wider leadership mandate
  • Private equity and venture funds, and their portfolio companies
  • Investment and wealth management firms
  • Banking, insurance and fintech leadership teams
  • Talent, people and L&D teams commissioning coaching
  • Boards, chairs and investment committees
  • Family offices and owner-led investment businesses

How I work

Four ways I tend to be brought in.

Sometimes one of these; often two or three in combination over a year.

01

1:1 executive coaching

Confidential, structured work with partners, directors, CEOs and CFOs. We agree the outcome first, then work on the behaviours that get in the way of it.

02

Leadership team development

Facilitation for boards, investment committees and executive teams. Surfacing what is unsaid, sharpening decision-making, and agreeing how the team will actually operate.

03

Leadership programme design

Programmes built around the real demands of the business rather than a generic model. Designed, delivered and reviewed against outcomes agreed at the outset.

04

Consulting on culture and performance

Practical diagnostic and advisory work on how a firm leads, decides and holds itself to account — and what it will take to change that.

Style

Collaborative and supportive, direct in substance. I create the psychological safety that lets senior people say the thing they have been avoiding — and then I hold them to a high standard against what they said they would do.

Leadership as a performance lever

When the stakes rise, leadership has to rise with them.

In investment and finance, technical credibility earns the opportunity. Leadership determines what happens next.

  • Partner transitions, where success depends on influence beyond technical expertise
  • Deal pressure, and the leadership demands of post-deal integration
  • Portfolio company leadership under a shortened value-creation clock
  • Newly appointed CEOs and CFOs stepping up faster than the org chart allows
  • High-performing but under-developed technical leaders
  • Regulatory and board scrutiny raising the cost of a poor conversation
  • Succession that has been discussed for years and never resolved
  • Sustaining performance without burning people out

For talent, people and L&D teams

The partner transition.

Read the note for L&D teams

Five minutes to read. Yours to circulate internally.

Every firm promotes partners on technical strength. Very few prepare them for the job they are actually taking on — leading people they used to sit beside, carrying a mandate nobody has written down, and being expected to influence a room before they feel ready.

I have written down how that transition actually works: the four shifts every new partner has to make, where it stalls, and what a firm can put in place before the announcement rather than a year too late. If you are responsible for talent, development or leadership in an investment business, it is written for you — to read, to argue with, or to circulate to your next promotion cohort.

Credentials

Accredited training.

ICF European Masters accreditation

Accredited coach training to European Masters standard, with continuing professional development and supervision.

Henley Business School

Coaching and behavioural change study at one of Europe's leading centres for coaching practice and research.

Psychometric and diagnostic qualification

Qualified to use leadership and team diagnostics where they add something — and to leave them out where they do not.

Case snapshots

Three pieces of work.

Anonymised, and shared with permission of the pattern rather than the party.

Financial services

Context

A newly appointed managing director in a regulated investment business, technically respected but struggling to shift from doing the work to leading the people who do it.

Intervention

Nine months of 1:1 coaching alongside structured feedback from the executive team, focused on delegation, difficult conversations and visible decision-making.

Outcome

Two senior hires retained who had been considering leaving, a functioning leadership rhythm, and a board that described the change as the most noticeable of the year.

Private equity portfolio

Context

A portfolio company twelve months post-acquisition, with a capable executive team pulling in slightly different directions on the value-creation plan.

Intervention

Facilitated team sessions to test assumptions openly, agree the small number of things that mattered, and define how the team would hold each other to account.

Outcome

A single agreed plan with named owners, materially calmer board meetings, and a sponsor who reported clearer, faster reporting from the team.

Professional services

Context

A partnership growing quickly, promoting on technical strength and finding that new partners were inheriting teams without ever having led one.

Intervention

A leadership programme designed around live business challenges, combining group work, peer coaching and individual sessions across two cohorts.

Outcome

Improved internal engagement scores among the teams involved, and a partner group with a shared language for what good leadership looks like in the firm.

Recommendations

In their words.

Recommendations from clients and colleagues, spanning 1:1 coaching, team facilitation and leadership programmes.

Ryan asks the question you have been avoiding, and he asks it in a way you can actually answer. Six months on, the way I run my leadership team is unrecognisable.

Managing Director

Investment management

Direct without being combative. He created enough safety for the team to say what they really thought, then held us to what we agreed.

Chief Operating Officer

Private equity portfolio company

Practical, grounded and completely without jargon. Our senior leaders came away with things they could use the same week.

Let's talk

Thank you for reading this far.

If something here resonated — a leader who has just stepped up, a team that is not quite pulling together, a programme you are shaping — I would be glad to hear from you. No pitch; just a conversation to see whether there is something worth doing together.
